What is Ralph scared of?
Ralph is the leader of the boys for the most of the novel, Ralph is utterly scared of the unknown, his fear ultimately leads to his downfall. Ralph’s biggest fear on the island is the fear of not getting rescued. This fear results in his obsession with the signal fire.
How is fear explored in Lord of the Flies?
Fear is ever present in Lord of the Flies. Throughout the novel we see fear of the unknown represented by the beast in the forest. We also see fear of death, especially in the final scene with Ralph, and fear of pain, such as with Sam and Eric when they are taken prisoner.
Why did Jack paint his face in Lord of the Flies?
Initially, Jack paints his face in order to hide himself better from the pigs he’s hunting. He concludes that the pigs can’t smell him, but they can clearly see him as he stalks them, and so he needs a sort of camouflage. Later, the mask takes on added significance because it hides Jack from the other boys as well.

What happens to the pilot in Lord of the Flies?
The pilot is shot down during the fighting, and his body lands in such a way that the strings of his parachute cause him to move when the wind blows in a particular manner, so that he is analogous to a marionette. When the boys discover him, they misinterpret his body as the Beast.
